Cumbria Steam Gathering - Press Information

For 41 years, the Cumbria Steam & Vintage Vehicle Society Ltd has been bringing together vintage vehicles from across the world to Cark Airfield in Flookburgh, near Grange-over-Sands, for one massive summer gathering. After the success of last year`s fantastic Ruby Anniversary event, the 41st Cumbria Steam Gathering returns in 2013 on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July. A huge colourful and noisy weekend event with a variety of entertainments, the Steam Gathering will feature splendid steam engines and vintage commercal vehicles, as well as hundreds of classic transport favourites including cars, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural and industrial tractors, farm equipment and stationary engines. Having received an entry form from Jack Dibnah, we understand that he and his brother Roger are intending to drive their roller from Lancashire up to the Cumbria Steam Gathering. The journey is expected to take three days and harks back to the days when the late Fred would be seen driving the roller, with living van attached, to all the local rallies in the Bolton area

This year`s headlining entertainment is courtesy of 3SIXTY Bicycle Stunt Team, who will be performing two shows per day in the main arena, as well as providing interactive coaching sessions throughout the weekend. On top of this, Richard Savoury will return with his fun, entertaining and educational Sheep Show, including shearing demonstrations. Plus, the NorthWest Lawnmower Racing Association will be holding their exiting lawn mower racing. With all the thrills of motor racing this is motor sport at grass roots level with cutting edge technology.

Other popular highlights are the large grandstands and main arena showcasing a constant parade of traditional treasures. In the working area, weather permitting, there will be demonstrations of ploughing, cultivating, woodsawing and haymaking machinery. Also in the working area, Kendal Bowmen will be showing off their Archery skills. On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, there will be the opportunity to drive a traction engine in the  main arena (donations will go to local charities).

This fun-filled family day out has plenty to keep the children entertained, including magic shows, miniature remote controlled car racing and a traditional fairground that has many vintage rides and attractions, some that are almost 100 years old. As well as this, youngsters aged 13-16 can complete a Junior Tractor Driver Training Course, obtaining a certificate of capability. (Pre-booking is essential for this two-day course, further details on exhibitors page of this website)

With many different catering outlets and fully licensed bar area, the Cumbria Steam Gathering is a great way to taste the sights, sounds and smells of a reminiscent family weekend.
