Cumbria Steam Gathering - Press Information

For over four decades, the Cumbria Steam & Vintage Vehicle Society Ltd has been bringing together vintage vehicles from far and wide to Cark Airfield in Flookburgh, near Grange-over-Sands, for one massive summer gathering. The Cumbria Steam Gathering returns for the 42nd time over the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July 2014. A huge colourful and noisy weekend event with a variety of entertainments, the Steam Gathering will feature splendid steam engines and vintage commercial vehicles, as well as hundreds of classic transport favourites including cars, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural and industrial tractors, farm equipment and stationary engines.

This year the organisers are pleased to welcome members of the Ford and Fordson Association who will be staging their 10th Expo event featuring the, mainly agricultural, output of the Ford Motor Company.

Other popular highlights are the large grandstands and main arena showcasing a constant parade of traditional treasures. In the working area, weather permitting, there will be demonstrations of ploughing, cultivating, woodsawing and haymaking machinery. Also in the working area, Kendal Bowmen will be showing off their Archery skills. On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, there will be the opportunity to drive a traction engine in the  main arena (donations will go to local charities).

This fun-filled family day out has plenty to keep the children entertained, including magic shows, miniature remote controlled car racing and a traditional fairground that has many vintage rides and attractions, some that are almost 100 years old. As well as this, youngsters aged 13-16 can complete a Junior Tractor Driver Training Course, obtaining a certificate of capability. (Pre-booking is essential for this two-day course, further details on exhibitors page of this website)

With many different catering outlets and fully licensed bar area, why not try a drop of Steam Gathering Ale specially brewed for the event by the Ulverston Brewing Company or take home some of the locally produced goodies from the food hall. A visit to the Cumbria Steam Gathering is a great way to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a nostalgic family weekend.
