Sheep Show, Super Dog Displays and Speedy Lawn Mowers at Steam Gathering

 
Now in its 38th year, the Cumbria Steam Gathering is as huge as ever with more than 1,200 catalogued classic exhibits, a traditional fair, displays, specialist caterers and crafts.
 
Held on 24th and 25th July 2010 on Cark Airfield, Flookburgh, the Cumbria Steam Gathering is a massive weekend event that has a whole host of entertainment, with majestic steam engines and commercial vehicles of a bygone era, as well as hundreds of classic transport favourites featuring cars, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural and industrial tractors, farm equipment and stationary engines.
 
This family day out also has plenty to keep the children entertained with magic shows, miniature remote controlled car racing and the traditional fairground, boasting vintage rides and attractions that are nearly 100 years old.
 
Music is provided by various bands including The Pantonic Steel Orchestra playing throughout the weekend. Popular highlights are the arena displays where a constant parade of vintage treasures can be seen, from the large grandstands,  as well as ploughing demonstrations, chain saw carving exhibitions, kite-flying displays and wrestling bouts from the Cumberland and Westmorland Academy. For the more adventurous, there's the opportunity to drive a traction engine.
 
This year’s headlining entertainment comes from Elaine Hill with her Sheep Dog Display,Richard Savory’s Sheep Show and the North West Lawn Mower Racing Association. During her displays Elaine’s dogs works geese and ducks around a miniature trial course and she covers the basics of training a working dog, while Richard’s fun and educational sheep show includes shearing demonstrations and “The Sheep Show Shuffle” – dancing sheep! Elsewhere, thrilling lawn mower racing takes place. With all the thrills of motor racing this is motor sport at grass roots level with cutting edge technology!
 
Access to the event is available by rail to Cark railway station and service buses. For those using their own transport, the Cumbria Steam Gathering is clearly signposted from Junction 36 of the M6 and parking is free with a designated car park for blue badge holders. Wheel chair accessible toilets. To help reunite lost toddlers and young children, free wrist bands are provided.
 
Cumbria Steam Gathering takes place from 9am – 5pm on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July 2010, at Cark Airfield, Flookburgh. Daily admission prices are: Adults £10, Senior Citizens £7, accompanied children under 16 are free.
